Between peanut butter and jelly, marshmallows and campfires, and Sonny and Cher, there’s no denying it: some things just go better together. The same could be said behind the bar, when a beer and shot collide. Dubbed the boilermaker, this boozy pairing is picking up steam across town in a variety of forms, from the decadent to the fuss free. Here are just a few of our favorites right now.
THE NAUGHTY & NICE at SIPPIN’ SANTA’S SURF SHACK (aka BOILERMAKER)
This East Village bar may have morphed into an ABV-packed winter wonderland through the holidays, but that doesn’t mean it will abandon any of the offerings that honor its original namesake. Take, for example, the Naughty & Nice: a glass of Southern Tier Pumpking and a shot of Avua Cachaca Amburana. Jonesing for something a little more seasonal? Opt for a cinnamon shot and pint of Bell’s Christmas Ale with the Jingle Bell Wipe-Out, or get cozy with the Gingerbread Man, comprised of a gingerbread shot and a serving of Schlafly Oatmeal Stout.
THE OFF SWITCH at THE SAINT CATHERINE
Matchups of Brovo Amaro 14 and a black lager or stout and Laird’s Applejack and an IPA are just a couple of ways this Prospect Heights bar is expanding their brunch to highlight beer and shot combos, based largely on their draft beers du jour. For a surefire go-to, check out the Off Switch, a can of Founders All Day IPA and a shot of Ancient Age Bourbon that earned it its name, according to bartender Brad Nicoli. “Isn’t that what a beer and shot are all about — taking all the stress from your day and shutting it off?”
THE NARRAGANSETT TALLBOY AND WHISKEY at FORREST POINT
Boilermakers are abundant at this East Williamsburg hangout, but make no mistake — each one found its way to the menu for a different reason. The Budweiser and Mellow Corn for its all American story, and the Modelo Especial and Tequila for a south of the border riff. As for the Narragansett Tallboy and Whiskey? Bartender Gareth Howells sheds some light. "A tallboy is a lot of beer, in the greatest possible way. Pairing it with a shot of whiskey simply prolongs the enjoyment."
THE SNOW LEOPARD AND PILSNER at HOLIDAY COCKTAIL LOUNGE
For the shot averse and the beer particular crowd, head to Holiday Cocktail Lounge. The team here pairs up a bright and bitter shot of Aperol, sugar, lemon, salt, and Snow Leopard vodka with a Victory Prima Pilsner, ensuring an all around approachable sipping and slamming experience.
